A Boy and his Dog

Miss Charlie is growing up fast.

She is starting to look a little like a lanky pre-teen.

People always stop us at the park where we take the dogs for walks and ask what kind of dog she is.  Several people have thought she was a Saint Bernard.  We are crossing our fingers that she won't get THAT big!

She is definitely a "herder" (both collies and australian shepherds are herding dogs, and she is a mix of those breeds and something else that is unknown, so maybe Saint Bernard, too!).  She likes to herd the boys when they run around the backyard, so we have to correct her on nipping at their heels.

We watched an episode of the Dog Whisperer where they took a herding type breed who had always been a family pet to a working ranch.  Within 5 minutes, the dog had successfully corralled an entire herd of sheep and he had never been around a single sheep in his life!

It is so interesting to me to learn about what your dog is bred for and what their natural instincts are, even if they are a "custom" breed (or Heinz 57 variety) like Charlie!

Valentine's Day

Both of the boys had Valentine's Day parties at school this year, so we needed to come up with 36 Valentine's cards and treats.  Several months ago, I came across a really cute Valentine's card idea...

I took pictures of the boys in front of a red curtain in our house with their hands outstretched...

...and then added two different Valentine's Day fonts in Photoshop that I found for free on the internet.

I added card stock to the back of the prints to make them more sturdy, and then just cut a slit at the top and bottom of their hands.  I let the boys put the suckers on their cards, and they were done!

They also had to have boxes with lids to keep all their Valentine's in.  So we went to Hobby Lobby to find some non-girly paper to cover their shoe boxes.

Pirates in red, black and white!

Hope everyone had a lovely Valentine's Day!

Baby Blues

A few people have asked me if Charlie still has blue eyes.  Sometimes puppies start out with blue eyes, sort of like babies, and then they change to brown as they get a little older.

But we still got the baby blues at 11 weeks old!

We love our little Charlie.  She is a great puppy, and she has been especially good for our yellow lab Jake.  He needed a doggy companion.

But just in case anyone out there is debating a puppy and you need a good dose of reality, so far today, I have caught her eating...

Painter's tape, a piece of wooden train track, socks, shoes, a kleenex box, a throw pillow,
a matchbox car, a puzzle box, a drum stick and a DVD box.
And the night is still young.

Of course, we still think puppies are worth all the work!  I mean, it is pretty fun to see this little face in the mornings...

Hanging out in the Dog Crate

"As your dog sees it, the crate is a room of his very own - a "security blanket." The crate helps to satisfy the "den instinct" inherited from his den-dwelling ancestors and relatives.  Your pet will feel secure, not frustrated once accustomed to his crate."  -The Humane Society

"Ummm...I am a tad bit freaked out by these tiny humans invading my quiet den."

"Alert!  Alert! I need to be evacuated stat!"
