A Few Movies, In Review

First up, circa 1996...
Grabbed this one at the Plano Public Library.  Somehow, even though I was a 19 year old girl when this came out in 1996, I didn't manage to see it until now.  Stunning oversight on my part.

I am going to hang my husband out to dry on this one.  He liked it.  Not sure if he was ready to admit that to the blog world, but I think he even said he really liked it.  Not in a Lord of the Rings or Gladiator kind of way, mind you.  But he still thought it was more than "alright".

I admit it.  I love films set in this period.  Loved the recent Pride and Prejudice, too.  Gwyneth Paltrow is made for this role of Emma.  I was actually considering watching it again, but someone had it on hold at the library and I wasn't able to renew it.  Bummer.  You just feel good after watching a movie like this.

It got 83% on Rotten Tomatoes, a site that I highly recommend and consult on a fairly regular basis before going to pick up a movie.

Next Up...
Hmmm....Still not completely sure what to make of this one.  I know this for sure - the acting is superb.  Stellar.  Exceptional.  I love me some Amy Adams (Enchanted anyone?).  And Meryl Streep is a brilliant actress.  I wanted to love it, but I just didn't.  It wasn't boring, per say.  But I would venture to say that the story lacked something.

Rotten Tomatoes gave Doubt 78% and had this to say "Doubt succeeds on the strength of its top-notch cast, who successfully guide the film through the occasional narrative lull."   Exactly. Well put, RT.

Oh My.  And this one....

Please do not rent this movie if you are feeling at all down in the dumps or depressed.  It may push you over the edge.  And come to think of it, don't rent this movie if you are really happy and excited either because you might NOT be after this movie.

This is a movie about the Holocaust.  It is haunting and unusual.  It brings you face to face with your own humanity and what one might do if put in this little boy's shoes.  If you are looking for a happy ending, well...rent Emma.  That doesn't mean this isn't a great film, because it is.

Rotten Tomatoes gave this one 65%.  This was Steve's favorite of the three films.  My favorite was Emma.

I'm so deep...

I was wondering about the boy in the striped pajamas. Thanks for the head's up!

Since I'm a huge Meryl Streep fan, I had planned on watching Doubt anyway.
But that reminds me to hit up the Library because I haven't seen Emma yet and who couldn't use a feel good movie right? :) THREE WEEKS, my friend! Whoohooo!

I LOVE LOVE LOVE Emma!!! I've seen it over and over. More times than I should probably admit. I also got the soundtrack, and I never do that :-P . It was the background music for my wedding.
